Huntingdon, PA (09/30/2016) – J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of cardiologists James Gerardo, M.D., and Medhat Zaher, M.D., to its medical staff. “The addition of Drs. Gerardo and Zaher to our cardiology team demonstrates a strong commitment to growing our cardiology program at J.C. Blair,” said Jason Hawkins, J.C. Blair President and CEO.
Gerardo is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University. While a student at Penn State, he was co-captain of the varsity gymnastics team and later served as a graduate and assistant coach. He earned his medical degree and doctorate in physiology from East Carolina School of Medicine and completed his residency at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in the Department of Internal Medicine. He returned to East Carolina University to complete a fellowship in cardiology and interventional cardiology. He worked as an interventional cardiologist in State College and Pittsburgh before joining Cardiology Associates in Altoona. He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease.
Gerardo has extensive teaching, research and publishing experience and is a member of the Society for Coronary Angiography and Intervention and the American College of Cardiology. In 2011, he was a nominee for the Most Valuable Consultant Award at Penn State Hershey Family and Community Medicine. “I am excited to be a part of the outstanding cardiology team at J.C. Blair,” said Gerardo. “We are looking forward to expanding our cardiology services to J.C. Blair and this community.”
Zaher earned his medical diploma after completing his studies and a mandatory internship at Cairo University Hospitals in Egypt. He completed a cardiology residency at the National Heart Institute in Cairo. He continued his training in the U.S., completing his internal medicine residency followed by a fellowship in cardiology at Staten Island University Hospital in New York. He then completed an interventional cardiology fellowship at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Jersey. He had a private cardiology practice in New Jersey before joining Cardiology Associates of Altoona. He is board certified in internal medicine, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, vascular medicine, endo-vascular intervention and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology.
Zaher was honored with the 2015 Best in Clinical Investigation Award from Seton Hall University. He was also a recipient of the Resident Teacher of the Year Award while serving as chief resident at Staten Island University Hospital. “I am enjoying the opportunity to get to know the patients in Huntingdon,” said Zaher, “I look forward to helping them better manage their heart conditions right here in their hometown hospital.”
Gerardo and Zaher join the cardiology team of Drs. Hany Shanoudy, Gorgi Kozeski, Michael Sabatini, Michael Larkin, Craig Brandt and Joseph Gattuso of Cardiology Associates of Altoona in providing full-time cardiology services at J.C. Blair.
