Hospitalist Program

What is a Hospitalist?

A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in the care of hospitalized patients and their unique conditions. Because hospitalists do not maintain a practice outside of the hospital, they can focus all of their attention on patients inside the hospital. Hospitalists manage your hospital care, coordinating and consulting with specialists, monitoring your progress, and staying in close touch with you, your family and your primary care physician. All J.C. Blair hospitalists are either board certified or board eligible in internal medicine or family practice.

J.C. Blair's Hospitalist team is a dedicated team of professionals who work with you and your healthcare needs. To learn more about J.C. Blair's Hospitalists, click here

What is a nurse practitioner?

Certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNPs) are an important part of J.C. Blair’s hospitalist team. A nurse practioner has a master’s-level degree in nursing and hands-on clinical training with patients. They are trained to diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries in patients of all ages. A nurse practitioner is licensed to care for patients without a supervising physician and provides a valuable extension to the medical staff.

Q: Why is my doctor not seeing me in the hospital?

A: Since no physician can be in more than one place at one time, your doctor has chosen to refer you to a hospitalist. Our hospitalists are in the hospital every day, all day and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Q: How will my doctor know what has happened in the hospital?

A: When you are discharged, a complete summary of your hospitalization will be transmitted directly to your doctor’s office. Hospitalists are also available to your doctor to answer questions and discuss your care at any time during your hospitalization.

Q: How does the hospitalist know about me?

A: The hospitalists will talk to your primary care physician on a frequent basis. At the time of your admission to the hospital, your primary care physician communicates with the hospitalist, informs him or her of your condition, and sends over records to provide as much information as possible about your illness. The process is similar to what your physician does when he or she refers you to a specialist for another opinion or for additional tests and treatment. Our hospitalists will also refer to past medical records here or from other healthcare facilities if needed.

Q: What if I don’t have a primary care provider?

A: Your hospitalist and discharge planners at the hospital can help you find a doctor after leaving the hospital. Records from your hospitalization will be sent to the physician of your choice.

Q: Does the hospitalist see maternity, pediatric or psychiatric patients?

A: No, for these specialties, our obstetrician/gynecologists, pediatricians and psychiatrists continue to come into the hospital to manage their patients’ care. Hospitalists may be consulted by these specialists if needed.

Q: How do I pay for hospitalist services and will my insurance cover the cost?

A: Generally, the fees for hospitalist care are no different than those you would expect from your own doctor. You will most likely receive bills from J.C. Blair Medical Services for physician fees and from J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital for Hospital charges not covered by your own insurance such as deductibles, co-pays, etc.

Q: How does the hospitalist program benefit me?

A: Because hospitalists are based at the hospital, decisions are made quickly as situations arise. Treatments are modified and test results followed up immediately. This helps prevent medical complications, reduce hospital stays and lower costs.

Moreover, the hospitalists have extensive training and hospital experience in caring for severely ill or injured patients. This results in more rapid and accurate clinical decision making for better outcomes and fewer re-admissions.

If you or your family needs to speak to a hospitalist, please ask your nurse to contact the hospitalist on duty.
