Tobacco Cessation Program Starts Dec 14

Huntingdon, PA (12/7/2017) – For many folks, this is the time of year for baking, shopping and making holiday preparations. Much emphasis is placed on helping and giving to others. One way we can give to others and help ourselves at the same time is to make positive changes to improve our own health.

J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital’s integrated HOPE Project care team is here to help those interested in improving their health by ending their tobacco use. “Give yourself the gift of improved health in the new year by enrolling in our free Freedom from Smoking program,” said cessation facilitator Jess Querry. “We are starting an eight week group program on December 14 which offers step-by-step guidance to help you quit by the beginning of the new year.”

The first three sessions are designed to help participants prepare to take action by identifying reasons for quitting, understanding triggers and developing individual quit plans. This preparation will enable participants to be ready to take action with a quit date of January 1, 2018. Several sessions after quit day are designated to help participants maintain a tobacco-free lifestyle. Participants are eligible for four weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) in the form of patches gum or lozenges. To be eligible for NRT, participants must be age 18 or older and cannot be pregnant.

The American Lung Association’s Freedom from Smoking program is widely regarded as the ‘gold standard’ in quit-smoking programs. According to the Freedom from Smoking website, “Every person’s experience with quitting smoking is different. The Freedom from Smoking program uses proven activities and tools to help you understand your own relationship with tobacco – and how to say good-bye to smoking for good.”

There is no cost to participate. Smokeless tobacco users are welcome. Classes will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday evenings beginning December 14 and running through February 1, 2018. The class will meet for about an hour at the J.C. Blair Education Center at 860 Bryan Street on the J.C. Blair Hospital campus in Huntingdon.
