Huntingdon, PA (9/26/16) – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and J.C. Blair’s Women’s Imaging Center is kicking off the month with the fourth annual Cindy Taylor Memorial Wear Pink Luncheon on Friday, October 7, at 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Ellis Hall Ballroom at Juniata College. The featured speaker will be Ramona Shope, CRNP, of the J.C. Blair Women’s Care Center. Tickets are $10, and available for purchase at the J.C. Blair Hospital Information Desk or through www.jcblair.org until Friday, September 30. Seating is limited, and carpooling is encouraged. For more information call (814) 643-8675.
Nurse practitioner Shope joined J.C. Blair’s Women’s Care Center in 2015 and works with obstetrician/gynecologists Drs. Ralph Aldinger and Norman Navarro. Prior to joining J.C. Blair, Shope worked at Geisinger Health System as a nurse practitioner, specializing in women’s health for over 11 years. She earned her nurse practitioner certification from The Pennsylvania State University.
During the Wear Pink Day Luncheon, Shope will talk about identifying personal risks for developing breast cancer. She will review specific risk factors and provide guidelines for women to consider for their individual breast health. “I am hoping my presentation clears up some of the confusion among women about self-breast exams, clinical breast exams, and when to get their first baseline mammogram and how often,” said Shope. “We still follow the recommendations of the American College of Radiology, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gyncecologists who recommend a baseline mammogram at age 40 and once a year follow-up exam for those at average risk.
Additional October Breast Cancer Awareness programs sponsored by the Women’s Imaging Center at J.C. Blair include:

Throughout the month, J.C. Blair’s Breast Health Coordinator Penny Shope will be presenting breast health educational programs at area senior centers and public housing facilities in the county. “Breast health education is so important in the fight against breast cancer,” said Shope. “If we can educate women about the importance of breast self-awareness, clinical breast exams, and mammography, and alleviate their fears if a cancer is detected early, we can save a lot of lives!”
