With the holiday festivities in full swing, J.C. Blair has some healthy tips to avoid overindulgences and ways to remain physically active. While unhealthy holiday treats can be found at every home, party, and even office meeting, it is important to remember that indulgences are permissible. By depriving all treats, the holidays will appear never-ending. By passing up the store bought cookies for the family’s traditional treat, the cravings will be satisfied without going overboard.
To stay physically active despite the dip in temperatures this season, change up the physical activities. Instead of going for a run on icy sidewalks, build a snowman, go sled riding, or have a snowball fight. With changing up the activities, it will benefit the body as well as allow more family time. If really ambitious, take an afternoon with the family to cut down the tree at a lot as opposed to purchasing a pre-cut tree. The aerobic activity of cutting down the tree and dragging to the vehicle can equate to an hour at the gym.
Practice simple swaps with recipes. Many holiday dishes contain unhealthy ingredients. By swapping out one unhealthy ingredient for a healthier one, the calorie and fat content of the dish can be lowered. For example, swap Greek yogurt for sour cream in your dishes. The Greek yogurt will still provide the creamy texture with half the calories and added protein.

On Wednesday, December 3, J.C. Blair’s Cardiopulmonary Department is offering free lung screenings from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in J.C. Blair’s Cardiopulmonary Department for smokers and those exposed to smoke. The screening assesses airflow limitations of the lungs and provides a good indication of the amount of oxygen in the lungs, how the lungs are functioning, and if there are signs of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) present. COPD generally includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The screening is also available by appointment by calling J.C. Blair’s Cardiopulmonary Department at 643-8645.
On Friday, December 5, J.C. Blair’s Education Department is hosting a CPR Healthcare Provider Class in J.C. Blair’s Education Center starting at 7:30 a.m. for individuals in the healthcare field seeking initial certification who have not completed a CPR class in the past two years or who have never taken CPR certification courses before. Cost is $60 and includes the cost of the textbook. To register in advance, call 643-8839.
On Wednesday, December 10, J.C. Blair’s Community Health and Wellness Coordinator Andrea Teeters will be offering free blood pressure screenings from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Taylor Apartments in Mount Union. J.C. Blair’s Registered Dietician Jessica Sweeney will also be providing information on healthy eating on a budget, MyPlate, and navigating a grocery store.
On Thursday, December 11, J.C. Blair will host its monthly Heart to Heart: A Post-Cardiac Rehab Support Group at 7:00 p.m. in J.C. Blair’s Education Center. Participants are invited to share achievements, goals, struggles, and how-to's in keeping a heart healthy lifestyle. For more information, call J.C. Blair’s Cardiac Rehab Department at 643-7064.

On Tuesday, December 16, Free Car Seat Safety Checks will be offered at the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Huntingdon from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Have your child’s safety seat inspected and installed by a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. Checks are offered the third Tuesday of every month at the police barracks or by appointment by calling J.C. Blair Safe Kids Partners at (814) 506-4007.
On Wednesday, December 17, Life After Bariatric Surgery (LABS) Support Group will meet in J.C. Blair’s Education Center at 6:30 p.m. All who have had bariatric surgery or who are interested in learning more about bariatric surgery are welcome to attend.
